TRANSAXLE REBUILDING AND RESTORATION

One of the most overlooked mechanical items in a Porsche 356 is the transaxle.  Many have more miles on them than you would imagine.  Most folks wait until they have a problem, sometimes catastrophic, before they have their gearbox repaired.  The best time to have your transaxle rebuilt and restored is when you have the car down for an extended period of time.  We have never rebuilt a 356 gearbox that didn’t need a part replaced.  Unfortunately, there is a shortage of mechanics that can properly work on your 356 transaxle and supply the correct parts during its repair.  At Wills Werks, we have the proper selection of new and used parts to ensure a proper rebuild.  This includes many different sources for parts to supplement our in-house inventory. 

There is quite a bit more to a proper rebuild besides installing new synchros and bearings in a 356 gearbox.  Parts must be magnafluxed, measured for wear and restored or replaced as necessary.  All internal parts will be ultrasonically cleaned.  There are also upgrades that will be performed according to Porsche factory bulletins and also upon recommendation of veteran transaxle rebuilders like Mike Robbins.  Early split case transaxle housings need to be cleaned and have a Dow surface conversion coating.  This is what gives the gearbox case the original gold coloring that will help protect the delicate magnesium.  We use only the best parts in our rebuilds.  We constantly seek out good quality used parts and manufacture or machine parts as needed.
