Making Porsche
356 Wooden-Handled Screwdrivers
The need, in some
cases, a burning desire to fill those vacant holes in our 356 tool kits
can become an obsession. Ray Wills definitely has been stricken with a
passion for completing tool kits. The really hard part has always been
finding original screwdrivers. Messko gauges used to be scarce, but eBay
has made them much easier to acquire. The screwdrivers, however, still
are very rare, elusive and really expensive when you find them,
especially on eBay!
For the past 20
years, usually someone has been making reproduction screwdrivers. Glen
Clevenger, Paul Gangemi, Don Marks and Zeke Sampson were making drivers
prior to my venture. Over the years, production has been limited and for
good reason. Making screwdrivers without original tooling is very
challenging and time consuming.
Ray has been making
screwdrivers for while now as a hobby under the name Toolwerks, which
will be a part of Wills Werks. This new generation of drivers has been
well received in the 356 community, even though no advertising has been
done. Ray uses materials, dimensions and colors that are true to the
originals. In fact, most reproductions are duplicated from original,
unrestored drivers. So if you can’t find any original drivers or don’t
want to pay thousands to acquire them and then pay again to have them
restored to show quality, you may want to check out the photos and place
an order.
